General description
NDUFS3 is the core subunit of the mitochondrial respiratory chain′s NADH dehydrogenase complex, also known as Complex I, the complex critical for the production of ATP and NADH electron transfer. In mammals Complex I consists of some 45 different proteins, NDUFS3 is the critical core subunit of the complex. Expressed in all cells and localized in the mitochondria but encoded by a nuclear gene, NDUFS3 plays a critical role in electron transport, our internal cellular respiratory chain, and mitochondrial function. NDUFS3 also is important in disease phenotypes and various cancers. Mutations in NDUFS3 give rise to Leigh syndrome a mitochondrial dysfunctional disease. In cancers, down regulation of NDUFS3 is linked with lowered host survival and increased cancer pathology.
